Katpana Cold Desert

Gilgit-Baltistan · Deserts & Plateaus · Rank

Overview:

Katpana Cold Desert, often called the “Cold Desert of Skardu,” is an otherworldly landscape where pale, wind-sculpted dunes unfold beneath jagged, snow-tipped mountains. Unlike the classic hot, rolling sands of the tropics, Katpana’s dunes possess a rare, almost lunar quality: cool to the touch, stark against alpine skies, and frequently rimed with frost or dusted in snow. The contrast between soft, granular ridges and glacial silhouettes creates an unforgettable tableau for travelers seeking scenery that feels simultaneously fragile and vast.

Why Visit:

Getting There:

Katpana is reached via Skardu, the principal town serving Gilgit-Baltistan. Most visitors arrive by road from Gilgit or by flight into Skardu when available. From Skardu town the dunes are a relatively short drive; local drivers commonly know the best vantage points and timing for light. Roads can be unpaved and weather-dependent, so allow flexible travel time and choose a vehicle suited to local conditions.

What to Expect on Arrival:

On approach, the terrain shifts quickly: mountain passes give way to expansive flats punctuated by wind-formed ridges. There are no formal pathways across the desert—visitors typically walk along the dunes, explore shallow gullies, and find higher ground for panoramic views. Temperatures can swing dramatically between day and night; bring layered clothing even in summer. Facilities nearby are basic, so pack water, snacks, sun protection and a small first-aid kit.
