Lake Hawea

Hawea · Lakes & Alpine · Rank 64

Ranked 64 on our list of Lakes & Alpine escapes, Lake Hawea feels like Wānaka’s deeper, wilder sister: a long, glassy ribbon of glacier-fed water hemmed by serrated mountain ridges and broad tussock country. Approach along the Hawea–Wanaka corridor and the first impression is theatrical — sudden blue interrupted by wind-sculpted ripples, beaches of pale gravel, and a sky that seems to stretch to the Southern Alps.

What makes Lake Hawea magnetic is contrast. On calm mornings the surface is a mirror, perfect for kayaks and stand-up paddleboards as mist lifts and bird calls echo off the slopes. By afternoon, the strong northwesterly winds transform parts of the lake into a playground for expert kite boarders and windsurfers, who carve and leap against a backdrop of rugged peaks. That blend of serenity and raw energy gives Hawea a personality all its own.
