Gertrude Saddle

Milford Road · Adventure & Trails · Rank 21

Gertrude Saddle sits above the famous Milford Road with a reputation that matches its dramatic setting: this is a raw, exposed, and uncompromising climb reserved for experienced hikers and climbers. Ranked 21 on our list of must-do adventure trails in the region, it is not for casual walkers. Instead, it is a route for those who seek a demanding day in the mountains and are prepared for complex terrain, rapid weather changes, and the satisfaction of earning a view that is, quite simply, among the best down into Milford Sound.

Why go

The payoff is heady. From the saddle the land falls away steeply to the fiord below, offering sweeping, vertical perspectives of the sound and the surrounding peaks that you won’t find from roadside viewpoints. The scene can feel cinematic: sheer cliffs, braided waterfalls, and the ribbon of road and water far beneath you. For photographers, alpinists and serious hikers, the visual reward matches the physical effort.

The experience

This is a full-on mountain outing. Expect extended sections of steep ascent, loose rock, and scrambling that may be exposed to significant drops. Route-finding skills are essential — the track is not the same as well-formed valley walks, and cairns or seasonal markers can be sparse. Weather in Fiordland is famously changeable; clear skies can shift to rain, wind and cloud rapidly, and conditions on ridges and the saddle can be markedly colder and wetter than down by the road. Move with that in mind: plan for margin and be willing to turn back if the conditions deteriorate.
