Potes

Cantabria · Charming Villages · Rank 95

Perched in a steep, sun-dappled bend of the Deva River, Potes feels like a living postcard: a maze of cobbled streets, stone bridges arcing over dark water, and the squat silhouette of the medieval Torre del Infantado keeping watch above red-tiled roofs. Known locally as the 'Town of Bridges and Towers,' Potes is far more than a pretty approach to the Picos de Europa. It is a village of layered textures and temperaments — history in its façades, hospitality in its taverns, and wild mountain drama on its doorstep.

Arriving in Potes is an invitation to slow down. The compact historic centre rewards wandering: pause beneath wooden balconies festooned with geraniums, duck into artisanal shops selling regional cheeses and preserves, and let the rhythm of the river guide you across stone spans that have connected neighbourhoods for centuries. The Torre del Infantado, a striking medieval keep, anchors the skyline and offers a tangible link to the town’s feudal past; nearby churches and manor houses add quiet architectural notes to every stroll.

Food in Potes is unapologetically mountain-driven and deeply comforting. Local taverns and small restaurants serve the hearty dishes that revived walkers need after a day on the trails — think thick bean stews, slow-cooked meats, and creamy Cantabrian cheeses paired with robust regional wines. Mealtimes here are unhurried affairs, and sharing a large pot of cocido montañés or sampling several local cheeses is the easiest way to understand the terrain: simple, honest, and utterly satisfying.

Beyond the village, the landscape quickly grows alpine. Potes is the natural gateway to the Liébana valley and the Picos de Europa National Park. A short drive from town takes you to the nearby teleférico (cable car) at Fuente Dé, which rises into a bowl of jagged peaks and high-alpine pastures; from its upper station, a network of trails fans out for hikers of every ability. For less strenuous outings, valley roads and panoramic viewpoints offer drama without the climb, with mist-filled mornings and sudden shafts of sunlight turning limestone ridges gold.

Potes also makes an excellent base for cultural detours. The surrounding Liébana valley is dotted with ancient monasteries
