Castles of Bellinzona

Ticino · Castles & Landmarks · Rank 97

Perched like a trio of stone crowns over the southern Swiss town of Bellinzona, the three medieval castles — Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro — read like chapters in a story of mountain defence, trade and ambition. From the town below, narrow cobbled streets funnel visitors toward fortifications whose sheer presence still commands the valley: thick walls, crenellated walkways and towers set against a backdrop of vineyards and the sudden sweep of alpine ridges.

Arriving and first impressions

Bellinzona is compact and gracious; approach on foot from the lively Piazza del Sole and you’ll feel the incline of history guiding you upward. A short lift or an easy uphill stroll delivers you to Castelgrande’s plateau, the largest of the three complexes. From here, the scale of the defensive works becomes clear: interconnected terraces give views across the Ticino plain, the glinting river below and the rising mountains beyond. The air carries a hint of chestnuts and coffee from the cafés back in town, while pigeons and the occasional schoolgroup animate the courtyards.

What to see and do

Castelgrande — the heart of Bellinzona’s story — is a place to linger. Stroll
