Cat Ba Island

Hai Phong · Islands & Beaches · Rank 44

Perched at the southern edge of the iconic Halong Bay archipelago, Cat Ba Island unfurls like a rugged emerald thrown into the Gulf of Tonkin: limestone cliffs rising from jade waters, dense rainforest swallowing steep trails, and a handful of beaches and secret coves that reward those who venture beyond the ferry terminal. As the largest island in the Halong Bay area and part of Hai Phong province, Cat Ba offers an arresting blend of wilderness and low-key coastal life — and a rare chance to glimpse one of the world’s most threatened primates, the Cat Ba langur.

First impressions: wild, walkable, and unmistakably coastal

Arrive by ferry or high-speed boat from Hai Phong or Halong City and you’ll soon feel how different Cat Ba is from its postcard-famous neighbors. Cat Ba Town is the island’s gateway — a compact, friendly hub of guesthouses, seafood restaurants and travel desks — but within minutes a winding road will lead you to quieter shores and the dense green of Cat Ba National Park. The island’s topography is dramatic and intimate: karst towers and forested ridges interspersed with small bays, hidden beaches and fishing villages where life moves at a measured pace.

A national park that keeps you moving

Cat Ba National Park deserves the center stage. Trails range from short, rewarding walks to full-day treks, taking you through primary and secondary forest, limestone pinnacles and viewpoints that deliver sweeping panoramas over Lan Ha and Halong’s karst-scattered seas. The trails are a naturalist’s delight: orchids, palms and resilient coastal species thrive here, while the morning chorus of birds provides a soundtrack to the climb. For a dramatic vantage point, aim for one of the ridge lookouts at sunrise or late afternoon when the light softens the rock faces and the bays gleam below.

Lan Ha Bay, hidden beaches and kayaking

On the island’s sheltered southern flank lies Lan Ha Bay, a quieter sibling to Halong Bay with equally photogenic limestone islets and secluded coves. Boat tours, day cruises and kayak rentals are the ideal way to explore — glide past sheer cliffs, paddle into calm lagoons and pull into tiny beaches where the only footprints are your own. Cat Co 1, 2 and 3 are the most accessible sandy stretches near Cat Ba Town, while more secluded sand and pebble coves reward visitors who take
